📘 Why This Matters in Urban Design

What is Walkability?

Walkability measures how friendly an area is to walking. Factors include the presence of footpaths, traffic conditions, and the safety and comfort of the pedestrian environment.

What is Human Scale?

Human scale refers to a set of physical qualities that fit the human body and movement speed. It implies environments that can be perceived in detail at walking speed (5 km/h), as opposed to "automobile scale" designed for speed.

Height-to-Width (H:W) Ratio

The relationship between building heights and street width defines the "enclosure" of a street. A ratio between 1:1 and 1:2 is often considered ideal for creating a comfortable sense of enclosure (Jan Gehl).
